AltTextLab automatically adds alternative text (alt text) to images on your website using AI. This improves SEO and makes your site more accessible to users with visual impairments.

How does the alt text generation work?

By default, the plugin sends only a public image URL to the AltTextLab server, which is enough for the AI to analyze the content and generate a relevant description. However, if your site or media is not publicly accessible, you can enable an option in the settings to upload the image itself instead. In both cases, the AI processes the image and returns descriptive alt text based on its visual content and your configured settings (such as product name, brand, or keywords).

Is there a free version?

Yes, you can start with a free trial, no credit card required.

Which images are processed?

If automatic generation is enabled, all images uploaded to the WordPress Media Library will automatically receive AI-generated alt text.
You can use the bulk generation tool to process all media files, post images, product photos, and page graphics.

Can it generate alt text for WooCommerce product images?

Yes! AltTextLab is fully compatible with WooCommerce and can automatically generate alt text for WooCommerce product images. The plugin understands product pages and includes relevant details like the product name and brand.

Is it compatible with my SEO plugin?

Yes. AltTextLab works with Yoast SEO, Rank Math, SEOPress, and other popular SEO plugins. If you’re using focus keywords, they can be naturally included in the generated alt text.

Does it support multilingual sites?

AltTextLab supports 130+ languages. You can select the desired language for alt text generation in the plugin settings.

Does the plugin work on localhost or private sites?

Yes. You can generate alt text even if your site is running locally or is not publicly accessible (e.g. behind a password). This is ideal for development environments or internal websites.
To enable this, simply uncheck the option “This site is reachable over the public internet” in the plugin settings — the image will then be uploaded directly to the server for analysis instead of using a public URL.

Will the plugin overwrite my existing alt text?

By default, AltTextLab does not replace any manually written alt text — it only fills in missing fields.
However, if you want to regenerate alt text for any images (including those that already have it), you can do so manually. The bulk generation tool also allows you to choose whether to generate new alt text for all images, regardless of whether they already have existing text.
